On April 29th, the English Corner was held on the first floor of the library, and many students couldn’t wait to start a conversation. The overseas teachers who attended the activity were Dr. Aviva Shimelman, Ms. Bronagh Mooney and Mr. Christopher Dockstader.
First, Chris explained his Chinese name to the students over and over again,“I’m Luo Bin. Luo is a normal family name. Bin, It means that I am gentle.”
His interesting pronunciation reminded the students of a word which listened like “Luoben”(streaking) in Chinese. Chris’s interesting story about his name attracted the students and brought them laughter.
At the same time, Aviva and Bronagh also shared their stories about their names. Bronagh said that she wasn’t satisfied with her name although it was special. For Aviva, she shared the origin of her name and asked the students about their names’ stories. Everyone shared their stories such as the person who gave names to them, the meanings of their names and so on. The different stories attracted everyone’s attention and gave a chance to them to learn more about the name’s culture.
As we know, the name is a symbol of a man which is normal but different. After this English Corner, the story of names can lead the students to know more about the real meanings of names.
