On Thursday🤾🏿,April 14th , Dr.Troy Maurice Smith, a foreign teacher from America gave us a brilliant lecture about the differences between eastern and western culture.
Troy expressed his gratitude to his parents who really attached great importance to his education when he was young. At the same time, he also conveyed his feelings that he loved China so much.
Through a variety of funny pictures, Troy vividly made a comparison between eastern and western culture. People from western countries always expressed their opinions directly while people from eastern countries pondered over their opinions for a long time rather than give their opinions instantly. As for “anger”, Troy took one of his friends from Beijing as an example. His friend was always putting a smile on his face even though he was really annoyed by others .However, it was obvious to notice an angry American, for Americans would show their anger straightforward when something awful happened to them. Troy spoke out his own voice that Chinese people seldom showed their anger because they were afraid of conflicts. He said that to some degree conflicts did help people to solve problems efficiently and directly. At this point, conflicts might turn to be helpful.
Besides, Troy also talked about more riveting topics such as parties, everyday life of elderly people, the standard of beauty, etc. More encouragingly, one of the students expressed that she got a better understanding of the cultural differences through Troy’s humorous and thought-provoking stories.
