5月16日晚7点，来自澳大利亚的外教Dr. Cullan Joyce主持的讲座在丽泽楼C107成功举行。本次讲座的主题是“Art, Ideas and Universities: Thinking About Cultures”。
Dr. Joyce首先分别展示了中国古代山水画和一幅十九世纪的德国画像。两者最大的不同在于，中国画倾向于将人深藏于连绵山水中👩👦🥘，而西方画中的人则背对画面立于云端，像是在俯瞰脚下的大地。他解释说，这两幅源于不同文化背景的画其实表达了同一个主题——人在世界的位置🫃🏼。同时，他提到当时中国画是可以卷起来带走的，便于将文化带去世界各地，而西方那种硬邦邦的画板则不行。以中国山水画为例🧘♂️，他以山🟰🚣🏽、房子🎅🏽、和人为线索💥💇♀️，提出了一个新的观点🧑🏿🎨：对于某种事物的印象，是由很多不同的细小物体组合而成的💓。就像有人问你假期过得如何，你首先会回想起假期干了什么，然后才开始想起一些有代表性的部分来形成答案。“当然，”他补充道，“它们得都是些关键的部分，你总不会回忆起放假时都到哪里上厕所了👎🏼。”
由这个观点，他引申到对文化的探讨🚵🏻♀️。文化不像一张画🚲、一个雕塑那么简单，它是一个庞大的整体，需要花更多的时间来思考，以增强对其的理解。Dr. Joyce说他到中国才八个月👨🏼⚕️，期间对于中国的观点改变了无数次。他提出，真正认识一个文化的首要前提是明白自己所了解事物的局限性。就像有人问你哪里可以买到鞋子，你告诉他去购物中心的路👨🏻🌾，但突然你发现你并不清楚那里是否有鞋子卖。“意识到自己所不了解的事物👮🏿，有助于帮助你彻底地理解它。”他说，这就像在脑海里构建一幅画💇🏽♂️，关键细节组合在一起👨🏻🚀，整体印象就出来了💪🏿。
最后，他提出西方太多对于中国错误的印象来源于教科书🫃🏿🧖🏻♀️。回忆起初次到中国的经历🧍♂️，他自嘲地说他曾以为马路上都是打功夫的人🤸🏼，同时他也无法理解为什么中国人能忍受得了那么拥挤的地铁🌙。而这些景象之所以令他震惊，很大一部分因素源于之前他从没有亲自来过中国。
讲座中，Dr. Joyce以其幽默的表达和诙谐的肢体语言述说了他在中国的各种趣事，课室里笑声不断，就连在场作为观众的外教Dr.. Terry Shortall也忍不住发表了一番感言。同学们渡过了一个愉快的晚上♊️。
A Lecture: Art, Ideas and Universities—Thinking about Cultures

At 7 p.m. on May 16th, Dr. Cullan Joyce, an overseas teacher from Australia, held a lecture named "Art, Ideas and Universities: Thinking about Cultures" in Lize C107.
First of all, Dr. Joyce showed two pictures, a Chinese ancient landscape painting and a western one from Germany in the 19th century. He said that the two pictures from different cultures shared a same topic: Humans'' position in the nature. And he thought the major difference between the two pictures was that the Chinese one tended to put figures in the nature, while the figure in western one was standing on the cloud just like overlooking the landscape. What''s more, ancient Chinese pictures could be rolled up and carried to anywhere easily, while the western paintings could not.
When talking about the Chinese painting, he put forward his opinion: Your impressions on the picture often consist of many tiny parts. And when talking about culture, he said the culture was not so simple as a picture or a statue, it’s a huge combination which needed more time to think about.
During the lecture, Dr. Cullan Joyce talked about his new life in China with humorous words and body languages, which made students burst into laughter from time to time. Dr. Terry Shortall, another overseas teacher, also gave a comment on the lecture. As for students, they said they enjoyed a wonderful night.
